Responsible parenting 101

OK- so here is my post and I'm using it to clear my mind since I can't release my anxiety on any tangible people right now!

I got home from work last night and ate with my family before getting ready to head to the gym! Once again I could not get myself to get this done at 5 am which seems to be becoming a habit the last couple of weeks! Anyway, my husband has been incredibly supportive and has been shuffling all the kids around for their evening activities so I can get my runs etc. done. He took off with all the kids for hockey and I paid some bills before heading out to the gym. (I would say about 75 percent of the conversations Joe and I have lately are through text message. I have turned into a 13 year old kid and can txt about 100 words a minute!!) Anyway, on the way to the gym, I was feeling a little guilty and I sent him a VERY inappropriate text. (Not really inappropriate in the sense that we've been married for 12 years and he's MY husband and I can write whatever I want, but inappropriate in the sense that it was meant only for his eyes!) Here is the response I got. "Ickkk Mom its Ryan my phone is dead" Joe had given her his phone since she was at a different rink and her's was dead.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now let me tell you without elaborating that you would most definitely not want your 12 year old daughter to see this message! Her or her 15 friends who were probably with her. I honestly almost went off the road and I could feel my throat close off.

Moving ahead. I ran 10 miles at the gym with a two mile warmup, 5 miles @ 7:13, 2 easy miles and the final mile @ 6:44. This went pretty well and I don't remember a minute of it as my mind was racing the entire time. After the treadmill I did a complete upper body weight cycle and a 20 minute ab workout. My friends Jess and Amanda had shown up at the gym and were on the bikes so I joined them and biked for another 35 minutes. I was bound and determined to stay at the gym until it closed to be certain my kids were all in bed before I got home. (I really need to talk about this with Ryan but like a coward I totally wanted to avoid the situation until at least the next day) It is now the next day-I have not slept and I'm still milling this over in my head and wondering how many people actually saw this message. Joe seems to find some humor in this whole situation! Typical male!

Anyway-my project after work today is to discuss this with Ryan and then run 100 miles outside in 20 mph winds and subzero temps to punish myself for my carelessness. My husband will also be running 100 miles for letting Ryan use his phone!!!!!! The joys of life and parenting! One day when she is 25 this will be funny and make a good story! Now-UGHHHHHH!!

ouch! talk about embarrassing. I feel like this is one of those stories that is going to be around for years. "Remember that time ..."

LOL. Your poor kid just had a lesson in the birds and the bees. Thanks for laugh! And thanks for the comment about tapering and your legs being so sore. Everyday is a new ache and a new throb in a new spot.

100 miles! That's good for you. You should ground yourself and take away your texting privileges!

Oh no! How embarrassing! Just remember that Ryan is probably more embarrassed having seen that than you are. And, after a couple of days, hopefully she will have forgotten about it. I'm sure she's happy that she has two parents who still love each other and enjoy the time they spend together. Good luck with that, though :)

OMG! I would have been so embarrassed too! That is one lesson I will have to remember for when I have kids! It will be funny when she is MUCH MUCH older! lol

Hi Jenn,
Oh my God, I so feel for you!! That is pretty funny!! Don't feel bad, the other night we were in our bedroom and we thought that our door was locked:) Kay was down stairs working on her computer and we figured she would be down there for at least an hour...it was 9 PM. Umm, lets just say she didn't know that we were getting busy..and she opened up the door and just came in our room all gang busters!!!! Oh my God!! At least your deal was just a text:) She was totally mortified and so was I!! FYI...always make sure that your doors are locked:) Great story and she will laugh about it when she is older:)

First off, I just laughed my a$$ off because I know the "type of text" you sent! I'm a married woman and sometimes that is the only way we communicate all day!
Second, I wouldn't worry too much. If you're texting like that with your hubbs, chances are you probably are already affectionate (appropriately, of course) in front of your kids and they already know mom and dad are all mushy together.
Finally, I bet she was more embarrassed then you and it sounds like she is a good kid and wouldn't have spread it around too far. Just laugh it off like it was a big joke and then have that fun birds and bees discussion. You're a pretty hip mom, I am sure the lines of communication are way open between you two. On the other hand, if this had happened with my parents, I would have died. Only because I know I was conceived through "immaculate conception!" LOL!
Don't beat yourself up too much, roll with it and chalk it up as a funny story for when she is all grown up! :) Good luck!

Oh well, look at the bright side: now you don't have to explain about the birds and the bees.

Oh no!!! That is one of those moments where it will be funny later! I agree with Christina, it is a good opener for the birds and the bees talk :-)

OMG, that is just too, too funny! I mean, not for you, of course, but for us readers..... A 100 mile punishment will feel soooo great!!!

oh my...you've gotten yourself in quite a pickle. but look at it this way, you can segway into the 'birds & the bees' talk with her.

I caught my parents in the act when I was 8 and I still (unfortunately) vividly remember the event. Of course, I was MUCH MUCH more embarrassed the time they walked in on me!

It happens- and it makes for a great story later :)

Oops! :) Poor Ryan. Good luck on the talk tonight. I guess that is why they preach never to text anything personal. :)

oh man! I got red in the face just reading that. Just think it'll be a great story at her wedding day! And talk about a good lesson for being careful of what you text or email...? sorry trying to find a bright side.

OMG, I feel for you.

But in a way I think it's good that kids know that their parents have a healthy relationship but on theother hand I can totally understand how mortified you must have been.

I have no advice other than to just be honest and get your daughter's phone charged :)

Oh no! Luckily, they will forget quickly

I am so sorry but I had to laugh out lound at that one. Reminds me of the time (before texting) I left a suggestive note in my husband's lunch bag only to be discovered by his boss.....

That is amazing. You know... even though it's totally not appropriate and I'm sure mortifying I think it's good for kids to see that their parents still love each other. I'm sure you're embarrassed but not the end of the world!

OMG! I would die! I actually worry about something similar happening everytime I email my boyfriend because when I type the first few letters of his name I have a few other people with his name in my cache and I always freak out after I hit send if I sent it to him or one of my blog readers! Someday, someone is going to get a very innappropriate message or photo from me I just know it! LOL!

Keri said...

Thanks for making me laugh! I can only imagine how horrified you were when you realized she got the message!

OMG, I'm just mortified for you about the text message! Kids get over that stuff but it takes moms a zillion years to get rid of the guilt!
Nice punishment, by the way. Imagine, some people run 100 for fun!

Oh...my...goodness! You poor thing! And, yes, someday you will look back on this and laugh...Good luck!

omgggggggg this is too funny! i'm sorry... but it's hilarious. i'd die if i was on her end, or yours!

Oh man, I'm sorry, but I laughed pretty hard when I read this. Truth be told, I know it's super embarrassing, but think about it like this, you and your hubby have a healthy relationship and your kids have parents that love each other.

Too funny! Bet she won't want to use the phone anymore now!
